Benefit throws 100 Valentine parties across Ohio

Valentine's Day will be even more exciting this year with 100 parties occurring simultaneously across Ohio. "A Night of 100 Parties" will benefit the Ohio AIDS Coalition, a non-profit organization whose members are people with HIV or AIDS.

OAC is perhaps best known throughout the state for their Healing Weekends, Healing Days and weekly Healing Circles. They also publish and distribute a monthly HIVresource newsletter, Wellness Times and offer a leadership training program to give HIV positive people the skills they need to advocate for their rights and needs with government leaders, health care systems and social service agencies. Proceeds from the 100 parties will enable OAC to continue assisting people living with the disease.

Of course, Valentine's Day parties are among the more popular events being scheduled in the many bars, restaurants and other businesses that have agreed to throw special parties to benefit OAC.

There are many ways the community can participate. Individuals and groups can host parties of their own or attend one of the many events scheduled thus far. The following is a partial list of those events:

"A Valentine Cocktail Party” in Ravenna. "Progressive Party Series" and "Expresso Yourself Coffeehouse," in Marietta.

"Fill My Heart With Love" party in Akron. "Wine With Friends-A Wine Tasting" and Celebrity Nite Club's "The Ruby Girls" show, in Dayton.

"Karaoke With Cupid,” a “Valentine Wine Tasting," Elephant Bar's "Two Hearts As One" party, Union Station Video Cafe's "Single and Bitter" party, "A Night of 100 Parties" show at Garrett's Saloon, and Mekka's "Fat Saturday," the official closing party, all in Columbus.

If you don't see your town on this list, call

the nearest gay club or gay-friendly business and encourage them to participate in this worthwhile event for OAC. For a complete listing or to host a party, call 800-226-5554.

and contemporary experience of gay America.

The February 15 show will feature an interview with playwright Robert O'Hara, whose provocative new play Insurrection: Holding History, places homosexuality at the center of the 1831 Nat Turner slave rebellion in Virginia. Holding History jumps back and forth in time from 1831 to the present, placing a young Ivy League student at the center of the uprising. Also interviewed are actors Robert Barry Flemming, who plays the gay student in search of a great thesis, and Ellen Cleghorne, a former cast member of Saturday Night Live.

In the Life then travels to Savannah, Georgia, to record a day in the life of The Lady Chablis, a drag performer made famous in John Berendt's book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. The Lady Chablis recently became an author herself, with her autobiography Hiding My Candy. In addition to accompanying her wig shopping, In the Life gives viewers a backstage look at The Lady while she gets ready to take the stage at Savannah's Club One.

In the Life can be seen on Saturday, February 15 at midnight on WNEO/WEAO, channels 45 and 49 in Akron and Alliance. Many Cleveland area cable systems also carry the station.

Next to the Gay Games, IGBO is the largest gay and lesbian sports organization in the world. The Sheraton City Center Hotel in the heart of downtown Cleveland will be the host hotel, and Palisades Palace in Wickliffethe largest bowling center in the countrywill be the host lanes.

In the past, this event has been hosted in cities such as Dallas, Atlanta, Los Angeles and Vancouver.
